Cheap, easy to work with and highly appreciated for their ecological fibre, paper and cardboard are extensively used in packaging manufacture. Although the apparent fragility of paper and card may appear to impose limits on their use, consumer expectations concerning packaging do however confer on them a front-line role.

Second-largest beasts in the packaging ecosystem

With 82 plants employing more than 10,500 people and a cumulative turnover of more than €5,9 billion (+ 25% compared to 2020), the cardboard and paper industry dominates the packaging sector, outstripped only by plastic. It employs just over 24% of the packaging workforce. These materials are therefore behemoths of the industry, and decisive for the sector in France.

Notwithstanding this prime positioning, the paper and cardboard packaging companies are preparing their future, with an investment rate of almost 11% of their added value and a debt ratio that remains very low (2.25%). Engagement in cutting-edge innovation coupled with a capacity for self-financing serves as the ideal recipe for maintaining, or indeed improving, an already comfortable position on a rapidly changing market. Hence, the paper industry assumes a growth in paper and cardboard production of 1.8% per year in France between 2020 and 2030.

Favoured materials in the context of ecological revolution

This prospect of a bright future for the paper and cardboard branch should not come as a surprise considering how these materials seem particularly suited to the challenges facing the packaging industry. With ecological concerns exerting more and more influence on consumer attitudes, the lawmakers are also inciting the industry to reinvent itself. Recyclable and reusable, paper and cardboard are therefore wholly suited to these imperatives.

Its low ecological impact is not the only strength of this branch of the industry, since the materials it produces are also adaptable and versatile, and they can be used at all levels of the supply chain (primary, secondary and tertiary packaging).
