Rethinking packaging: reinforcing paper with biosourced and biodegradable additives.
11 | 04 | 2024
French start-up FunCell is using plant-based raw materials to reinforce cardboard packaging - without using plastic and with an excellent recycling rate!
Following laboratory tests and successful fund-raising, FunCell is ready to launch a production plant by 2025!
The company, which was set up in Grenoble in 2020 as a spin-off from the renowned CNRS and CERMAV research institute, has already demonstrated its expertise. Indeed, packaging waste has been at the top of the agenda for some time now. But since the EU announced its catalogue of measures, the debate on reducing waste and increasing recycling has really gained momentum.
FunCell's agenda and expertise come at just the right time: paper manufacturers are also looking for additives that improve paper and cardboard by strengthening their structure and making them more resistant - without using plastics, which are generally not recyclable.FunCell's expertise is based on a biosourced macromolecule, marketed under the brand name BioWet®, which is used to enhance the mechanical properties of paper products while reducing paper pulp by up to 30%. ‘We have been able to double the resistance under mechanical stress in the dry state and even increase it fifteenfold in the wet state’, explains Gilles du Sordet, CEO of FunCell.
A second product line, BioGraft™, is used to develop barrier papers.
In addition to the mass production that is starting up and the industrialisation of the technology, the company is betting on expanding its customer base, including internationally. Looking forward to see you at stand 5 ST005!
